#1 LSU-Shreveport Tops Bobcats

(Peru, Neb.) – On Friday night, the number one Pilots from LSU-Shreveport (LSUS) were a little too much for the Peru State College (PSC) Bobcats as LSUS won 9-3 to improve to 49-4 on the year.

With the loss, the 'Cats are now 36-17 and will play the winner of the first elimination game of the opening series between Bellevue University and Grand View University.  The game will take place Friday night at 6:30 p.m.

With a win, PSC would face the loser between LSUS and Lindsay Wilson (Ky.) at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

The Pilots jumped on the Bobcats in the second inning where they scored four runs to take the early lead.  In the third, LSUS added two more runs making it 6-0.  That lead would stand through the fifth before Peru State scored their initial runs of the game in the top of the sixth.

James Welty (Omaha) was hit by a pitch to get things started and went to second on a wild pitch.  Jonathan Castillo (Paterson, N.J.) singled up the middle which allowed Welty to score.  Castillo went to second on the throw home.  After a strikeout, Jeff Eubank (Fort Pierce, Fla.) reached with a walk putting runners on first and second.  After another K, Derek Voigt (Auburn, Wash.) singled to right bringing home Castillo cutting the lead to 6-2.  The 'Cats would leave the runners stranded as the next batter was struck out.

LSUS added one in the bottom of the inning making it 7-2.

In the top of the seventh, Brenden Gentry (Sallisaw, Okla.) got on with a walk for PSC.  Gentry went to second on a ground out and following a strikeout, went to third and later home on a Pilot error which allowed Castillo to reach base.   That would be the last run for PSC and at that point it was 7-3 Pilots.

LSU-Shreveport added two more in the seventh and eventually won 9-3.

Castillo and Voigt each had two hits and one RBI to lead PSC.

Tim Crawford (Omaha) started on the mound for PSC and threw five and two-thirds innings.  Crawford gave up eight hits, seven runs – all earned, and struck out five.  Crawford was tagged for the loss.  Timothy Patterson (Valdosta, Ga.) came in to relieve Crawford and pitched the final two and one-third innings.  Patterson allowed three hits and two runs – both earned.
