(Peru, Neb.) – The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has announced the 2011 Daktronics-NAIA Volleyball Scholar-Athletes. Six Peru State College (PSC) volleyball players are among the 392 players across the country who were honored.
Seniors
Kelsey Monahan (Atkinson), Carly Morehead
(Fairbury), Maddy Lister
(North Platte), Katlyn Donovan
(Greeley), and Emily Maresh
(Central City), along with junior Becky Boshart
(Wood River) were the six Bobcats earning the recognition. For Monahan, this was her second time receiving the honor. Maresh, technically a junior eligibility-wise, has earned enough credits to be classified as a senior academically.
The scholar-athletes were nominated by Bobcat head coach Lexie Baack and associate athletic director/sports information director
Ted L. Harshbarger. Each student-athlete has to maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and must be a junior academically to qualify.
The two-time, Monahan is a psychology major. This past season, Kelsey primarily played as a defensive and serving specialist. Monahan graduated from Atkinson West Holt High School.
Morehead, the middle blocker, came to Peru State having played collegiately her first two years at Southeast Community College-Beatrice. The elementary education major played at Fairbury High School. Following the season, Morehead earned Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC) All-Conference First Team honors.
Another early elementary education major, Lister played at North Platte Community College and North Platte St. Patrick's High School before becoming a Bobcat two years ago. Lister earned HAAC All-Conference Honorable Mention at the conclusion of the season for her play as an outside hitter.
A Greeley-Wolbach High School graduate, Donovan joined the Bobcats last spring for training. The K-12 physical education and exercise science major previously played with Morehead at SCC. Donovan primarily played as a right-side hitter and setter for PSC.
Maresh is a K-12 physical education and exercise science major and came to PSC after having a very successful high school career at Central City High School. After earning three HAAC Libero of the Week honors, Maresh was named to the HAAC All-Conference Second Team.
The lone junior, Boshart played her high school ball at Wood River High School. The elementary education major was a defensive specialist for the 'Cats.
Coach Baack was pleased to have six of her student-athletes earn honors. Baack said, “Our team as a whole realizes the importance of getting an education while playing collegiate volleyball. That is the main reason why the girls are here. These young ladies have worked hard not only on the court, but in the classroom, and are truly deserving of the honors.”
