Bobcat Football Players Set Four New Records

(Peru, Neb.) – The Peru State College (PSC) Bobcat football team finished the 2011 season with a record of 2-8 and 2-7 in their first season in the Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC).  In the pre-season, the 'Cats were expected to finish seventh in the HAAC, but finished one notch lower in eighth out of ten teams.

Sophomore defensive back Garret Campbell (Santee, Calif.) set two records this past season, both in the kick return game.  Campbell set the individual kickoff return game record for most yards on returns with 168.  In addition, Campbell set the individual season record with 692 yards.  Sophomore defensive back Trey Rigby (Oak Grove, Mo.) is now tied for sixth all time with the longest interception returned for a touchdown with a 70 yard return.  Red-shirt freshman quarterback, Tyler Francis (Lincoln), set the mark for highest completion percentage for a game with a .733.

The fourth Bobcat into the record book is senior wide receiver Cole Gottula (Franklin).   Gottula actually set a record last year and was not credited for it.  Gottula averaged 22.9 yards per catch breaking a 31-year old record set by PSC Hall of Famer Roosevelt Brown in 1980 when Brown averaged 22.3 yards per catch.
 
The Bobcats ranked nationally in the NAIA in numerous categories for team statistics. Some of which included: second for field goal percentage (.857), 25th for kickoff return yards per attempt (20.3), 29th in punt yards per attempt (37.7), 45th in opponents' 3rd down conversion percentage (35), 46th in rushing defense per game (170.1), and 50th in total sacks against (23).

The team also had players ranked nationally in the NAIA in a number of individual categories.   The Bobcats include Campbell - fifth in total kickoff returns (692). Rigby - fifth in fumbles forced per game (0.300) and 47th in passes defended per game (0.900).  Levi Cockle (Lincoln) - eighth in field goals percentage (0.857), 34th in field goals (0.600), and 36th in total field goals (6).  Preston Bruss (Bennet) - tenth in total tackles (all positions) per game (10.1), 28th in sacks per game (0.600), and 42nd in total sacks (5.500).  Sydney Shepler (DeWitt) - 23rd in passes defended per game (1.100). Kory Klover (Hebron) - 37th in punt yards per attempt (36.600). Francis - 38th in passing yards per game (156.700) and 39th in total passing (1,567).

In the Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC), numerous players were ranked in the top 20 of different categories.  They included Bruss – first in total tackles all positions (92), tied for seventh in sacks per game (0.6), tied for eighth in sacks (5.5), and 15th in tackles for loss/game (0.9).  Cockle – first in field goals percentage (0.857), seventh in field goals/game (0.7), tied for seventh in total field goals (6), eighth in scoring (kicking) (34), eighth in scoring/game (kicking) (3.8), and tenth in PAT kicking percentage (0.762).  Campbell finished second in kickoff return yards (611). Francis finished third passing/game (164.1), third in passing (1477), sixth in total offense per game (151.6), and seventh in total offense (1364).

Other Bobcats ranked include Quentin Edelman (Sabetha, Kan.) finished tied for sixth in receptions per game (3.9), 14th in punt returns total yards (39), tied for 15th in receptions (31), and 18th in receive yards (37.0).  Gottula finished tied for sixth (3.9), sixth in receive yards per game (57.6), 11th in receive yards (461), and tied for 15th in receptions (31).  Shepler finished third in pass defended per game (1.1) and 16th in interceptions/game (0.2). Curtis Larsen (Plattsmouth) finished sixth in total tackles (all positions) (58). Adrian Lawson (Lincoln) finished seventh in total tackles (all positions) (65) and 16th in passes defended/game (0.7).  Rigby finished tied for seventh in passes defended per game (1.0). Ryan Ludlow (Plattsmouth) finished tied for tenth in total scoring (TDs) (4.0), tenth in scoring/game (36), and 14th in total scoring (36).

More Bobcats with rankings included Lance Steffen (Murdock) finished 11th in receive yards per game (46.1), 14th in receive yards (415), 19th in receptions (29), 19th in scoring (TDs) (24), and 19th in scoring/game (2.7). Jacob Grobe (Oakland, Iowa) finished 15th in passing with (122). Joel Woodhead (North Platte) finished 14th in receptions (32) and19th in receive yards per game (33.3). Wade Halvorsen (Ravenna) finished 16th in tackles/game (all positions) (5.9), and 18th in defended/game (0.6). Antonio Turner (Jasper, Fla.) finished 17th in kickoff returns (194), 18th in rushing/game (32.4), and 19th in all purpose (620).
